The Next Disney Hand Drawn Feature?

All hail the Snow Queen . . .

From /Film.com . . .

"The story is an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's 1845 fairytale The Snow Queen. The project has been in development at the mouse house off and on for at least a decade, originally shelved in late 2002, Glen Keane infamously quit the project in 2003, and the film was put on hold again in March 2010. When the project was last in development, it was set to be Disney’s next hand drawn animated film after The Princess and The Frog. We don’t know if that is still the case or if it is now a computer animated release."

"Before the project was put on hold in 2010, we learned that Alan Menken, the musical mastermind behind The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, was working on the music."

I'm interested! I thought Princess & Frog was okay at best. Whereas I loved Tangled. It would be nice to see a traditional hand drawn flick with a script as strong as that.

However I don't know the source material. Anyone familiar with the HCA story want to chime in? Could this be the next Little Mermaid (also Andersen) or are we worried? It concerns me to hear that Glen Keane walked on the project a few years ago. It's good to hear Alan Menken is on board, but you still need a strong story and direction, which we know Keane can provide.

UPDATE 6/11/12:  I seem to be following this movie from inception, even though I'm not sure why.  Today Slashfilm.com has announced some more casting and a plot synopsis.
The more I read the more excited I become for this one!

"This week brings several more big updates: Idina Menzel has landed a major part opposite Bell, while the music department has added some exciting fresh blood in the form of husband-and-wife duo Robert Lopez (Book of Mormon) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Winnie the Pooh)."

If you're still asking "who is Idina Menzel?" well . . . first of all shame on you!  She's already appeared in a handful of features including Rent and a Disney flick you might remember called Enchanted.  More importantly, if you've ever seen her sing live, it's a religious experience.  And that's coming from a completely hetero neanderthal who doesn't like musicals but agreed to see a little production in New York a few years back called Wicked.  All I can say is why she's not a household name still is a mystery.  Maybe she's too broad for the camera to capture, I don't know.  But since this production will rely on her vocal talents, sounds like a home run in the bottom of the 9th in a tied game 7.  This is a win.

Ahem . . . had to butch it up with a sports reference there!

As for the official synopsis of Frozen:

In “Frozen,” a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, so Anna (voice of Bell) must team up with Kristoff, a daring mountain man, on the grandest of journeys to find the Snow Queen (voice of Menzel) and put an end to the icy spell. Encountering Everest-like extremes, mystical creatures and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.

Sounds good so far!  Can't wait to see more!
